Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle

David Kolb's experiential learning cycle describes learning as a four-stage loop, and PsychPraxis is structured around it directly rather than treating it as background theory:

A practical manual you read and copy from only ever engages the third stage. PsychPraxis is built so every practical moves you through all four.

Why Reflection Is Mandatory, Not Optional

Research on reflective practice (going back to Donald Schön's work on the "reflective practitioner") consistently finds that experience alone doesn't reliably produce learning — what matters is deliberately thinking back on the experience and articulating what it meant. This is why the Reflection panel asks specific, practical-relevant questions rather than a generic "how did that go?", and why your reflections are saved and shown back to you later in My Reflections and the Growth Timeline. Writing it down, and being able to look back at it months later, is the mechanism — not a formality.

Constructivism — Your Portfolio Is Your Own Understanding

Constructivist learning theory holds that understanding isn't transferred from teacher to student like a file copy — it's built by the learner through activity and reflection. This is the reasoning behind the Data Vault and My Reflections being framed as your portfolio rather than just a gradebook: the combination of your own data and your own written reflections on it is, quite literally, your own constructed understanding of the method. Two students who ran the same practical will have different vault entries and different reflections, because their understanding of what happened is genuinely their own.

Competency-Based Education — Why Completion Isn't the Goal

A checklist of completed practicals tells you what a student has done, not what they can now do. My Professional Growth exists because competency-based education frameworks (which underpin NEP 2020 and UGC-LOCF) ask a different question: across all the things you've done, what transferable abilities — experimental design, data interpretation, ethical practice — have you actually built? That's why the Competency Bars and Graduate Attribute cards on that page don't just count practicals; they trace each one back to the specific competency it evidences.

Why Some Activities Are Marked "Educational Simulation"

Some practicals in PsychPraxis (for example, the Counselling Skills Demonstration or the Frustration Reaction Test simulation) involve interactions or instruments that, in real clinical or research practice, require licensed administration, trained supervision, or real human participants. PsychPraxis labels these honestly as simulations or familiarisation exercises rather than presenting them as equivalent to professional administration. This isn't a limitation hidden from you — it's a deliberate design choice consistent with the platform's non-clinical teaching purpose (see About → What Makes PsychPraxis Different). You still build real understanding of the method and its logic; you just won't see a real diagnostic or clinical judgement come out of it, because that would misrepresent what a short undergraduate practical can responsibly produce.

In short: every major design choice in PsychPraxis — the reflection requirement, the portfolio framing, the competency tracking, the careful labelling of simulations — traces back to a specific, citable principle in learning science. What Is PsychPraxis?

PsychPraxis is a browser-based digital psychology laboratory for undergraduate psychology education — built so that every student, regardless of their institution's physical laboratory resources, can perform genuine experimental, assessment, observational, and reflective psychology practicals, generating their own real data and real learning artefacts within an institutionally-governed, ethically-bounded, non-clinical teaching environment.

It exists because undergraduate practical syllabi assume access to apparatus, licensed psychometric instruments, and consistent one-to-one supervision — conditions that many colleges, particularly in resource-constrained settings such as Jammu & Kashmir, cannot reliably provide. PsychPraxis converts "we don't have a tachistoscope" or "we don't have a licensed personality inventory" from a teaching dead-end into a genuine digital activity with real pedagogical value, without lowering the academic standards set by NEP 2020, UGC-LOCF, and NAAC.

  • Experiential Learning — every practical generates the student's own data, because psychological understanding comes from doing science, not reading about it (Kolb's experiential learning cycle).
  • Reflective Practice — writing about what you did and what it means is how experience becomes learning. This is why a Reflection panel follows every practical.
  • Constructivism — the Data Vault and My Reflections together form a portfolio of the student's own constructed understanding, owned by the student.

What Makes PsychPraxis Different

A practical manual describes what should be done. PsychPraxis is the doing — students generate their own data, their own scored profiles, their own coded transcripts and sociograms, rather than reading a description of how someone else's experiment turned out. Purpose and Educational-Use-Only Framing

PsychPraxis is an educational simulation and practice environment developed to support undergraduate psychology learning under the B.A. Psychology Honours curriculum. All exercises — including self-report questionnaires, simulated cognitive tasks, and skills-demonstration activities — are provided solely for instructional purposes: to familiarise students with research methods, psychometric concepts, and professional skills. No exercise on this platform constitutes a validated clinical, diagnostic, or assessment procedure, regardless of how closely it resembles published instruments.

Informed Consent for Peer-Administered Practicals

Several practicals require students to administer tasks, interviews, or questionnaires to peers or other individuals (e.g., Case Study Method, Interview Method, Observation Method, Sociometry, Family Environment Scale). Before any such activity, the administering student must:

  1. Explain the purpose and educational nature of the activity to the participant in plain language.
  2. Confirm the participant's voluntary agreement to take part.
  3. Confirm the participant understands they may decline to answer any item or withdraw at any point without penalty.

You are responsible for the security of any data you choose to export, save, print, or share (e.g., screenshots, downloaded reports, or entries in your Data Vault). Any data collected from peers as part of an assignment (interview notes, questionnaire responses, observation logs) must be anonymised before submission and stored only as long as required for the assessment, then securely deleted or destroyed.

Self-Report Measures Touching on Mental Health

Certain practicals use self-report measures that cover topics such as mood, stress, anxiety, or general psychological well-being (for example, scales modelled on the GHQ-12, PSS-10, or PHQ-9 depression-screening format). These are included strictly to teach students about psychometric structure, scoring, and interpretation — they are not diagnostic tools and do not constitute a mental health assessment of the person completing them.

If completing any such exercise brings up difficult thoughts or feelings, you are encouraged to pause the activity — you are not obligated to complete it.

What PsychPraxis Does and Does Not Certify

PsychPraxis does not certify, diagnose, screen for, or rule out any psychological, psychiatric, or medical condition in any user. Scores, profiles, or interpretive statements generated by any exercise are illustrative outputs for learning purposes only and must never be used as the basis for a real-world clinical, educational, occupational, or legal decision about any individual — including yourself, your peers, or any participant in a peer-administered exercise.

Where a practical is based on the conceptual framework of a published psychological test, this does not imply that PsychPraxis is a licensed implementation of that test, nor that any norms, cut-offs, or interpretive bands presented are validated for the population using this platform. Any resemblance to commercially published instruments is for conceptual/educational illustration only.

Faculty oversight: All practicals are intended to be completed under the guidance of, and with access to, a qualified faculty supervisor (the Head of Department or assigned course instructor), who remains the appropriate point of contact for any ethical concerns, requests for accommodation, or questions about the appropriateness of a specific exercise for a specific student.

PsychPraxis was designed and built by Dr. Nasir Mohammad Bhat, Head of the Department of Psychology at Government Degree College for Women, Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir, India — a constituent college of the University of Kashmir. 2 · Proposed Design
Design: Quasi-Experimental, Non-Equivalent Comparison-Group Design (Two Parallel Sections, Same Academic Year)

Random assignment of individual students to PsychPraxis vs. traditional practicals is not feasible or desirable within a single timetabled practical batch. The recommended design instead compares two intact sections of the same semester cohort (e.g., Section A and Section B of B.A. Psychology Honours, Semester IV), with section allocation to condition determined by existing timetable/lab-slot assignment (i.e., a naturally-occurring, non-researcher-manipulated grouping) — minimising selection bias relative to allowing students to choose their own condition.

Condition A — PsychPraxis Group: Completes the six practicals (or a defined subset) via PsychPraxis, following the session structure validated in the internal pilot (Pilot Evaluation page).

Condition B — Traditional Group: Completes the same six practicals via standard in-person apparatus/paper-based methods, taught by the same instructor(s) using the existing departmental practical manual.

Alternative / Supplementary Design: Cross-Year Cohort Comparison

Where only one section exists per semester, a cross-year (historical cohort) comparison can supplement the two-section design: the current year's cohort (PsychPraxis) is compared with the previous year's cohort (traditional practicals only), using archived practical records, viva marks, and end-semester examination scores as the traditional-group outcome data.

Limitation: Cross-year comparison introduces cohort effects (different students, possibly different examiners/question patterns year-on-year) and should be treated as a secondary, exploratory analysis rather than the primary comparison — reported separately and interpreted cautiously.

Equivalence checks: Both designs should report between-group equivalence on baseline variables — prior academic performance (previous semester GPA/percentage), age, and a baseline digital-literacy self-report — to characterise (not statistically equate) the comparison groups, since true randomisation is not possible.
3 · Sample Size Considerations

4 · Outcome Measures
4.1 · Knowledge Retention
Design: Pre-Test / Post-Test / Delayed Retention Test

Instrument: A 15–20 item multiple-choice/short-answer concept test covering the theoretical content underlying the selected practicals (drawn from the existing viva question banks for each practical, converted into a closed-format test for objective scoring). The same instrument (with item order randomised) is used at all three timepoints.

Timepoints:

  • Pre-test (T0): Administered before the first practical of the relevant block, both sections, same week.
  • Post-test (T1): Administered within one week of completing all six practicals, identical instrument.
  • Delayed retention test (T2): Administered 6–8 weeks after T1 (e.g., at the start of the following semester, before the next topic block begins), to assess retention rather than immediate recall.

Scoring: Percentage correct at each timepoint; primary derived measures are the T0→T1 gain score (learning) and T1→T2 change (retention/decay).

4.2 · Practical Skill Demonstration

Both groups complete the same six practicals and submit practical records in the same format (a common record template, independent of whether data was generated digitally or manually), scored by two raters blind to group allocation where feasible (record sheets stripped of any PsychPraxis branding/screenshots before scoring).

Viva performance: Standard end-of-block viva (as per existing departmental practice), scored on the existing departmental viva proforma by an examiner not involved in delivering the practicals to either section, blind to group where feasible.

4.3 · Student Satisfaction
Adapted Pilot Feedback Questionnaire + Group-Specific Items

The 15-item Student Feedback Questionnaire developed for the internal pilot (Pilot Evaluation page) is administered to both groups at the end of the practical block, with wording adapted so items refer generically to "this semester's practical sessions" rather than naming PsychPraxis specifically for the traditional group's parallel items (e.g., usability/clarity items are rephrased to apply to in-person instructions and apparatus).

PsychPraxis-group students additionally complete the comparison-with-traditional items (originally items 8–10 of the pilot questionnaire) only if they have prior experience of traditional practicals from an earlier semester (a screening question determines this); otherwise these items are skipped to avoid speculative responses.

Open-ended items (reflection questions) are retained for both groups and analysed thematically, providing the qualitative complement to the quantitative satisfaction scores referenced in H3b.

6 · Ethical Considerations

Study Title

A Quasi-Experimental Comparison of Digital and Traditional Psychology Practical Sessions: Effects on Knowledge Retention, Practical Skill Demonstration, and Student Satisfaction

Abstract

This study evaluates whether PsychPraxis, a browser-based digital psychology practical platform developed at this institution, produces learning outcomes comparable to traditional in-person practical sessions for undergraduate B.A. Psychology Honours students, following a successful small-scale internal pilot. Using a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent comparison-group design, two intact sections of the same semester cohort (total N expected 30–60) will be assigned, by existing timetable allocation, to complete an identical set of six practicals either via PsychPraxis (intervention group) or via standard in-person apparatus/paper-based methods (comparison group), under the same instructor(s) and weekly schedule.
